The Scottish Highlands

It was the last of the Jacobite attempts to reinstate a Stuart and was led by Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. This ancient royal dynasty traced its ancestry back to the Dark Age Gaelic Kingdom of Dal Riata. In opposition was the son of King George 11, Prince William, Duke of Cumberland who led the government troops.  The Jacobites were outnumbered around 9000 to 6000, and the ground was too marshy to accommodate the Highlanders’ favourite tactic - the headlong charge into the enemy’s ranks.
